Why is an understanding of Confucius considered vital to any study of Chinese history?

What relevance do his ideas have in today's China? Is The Great Learning part of the

Analects? What is Confucius teaching about the dao here? How is this Chinese concept

being translated into English? How else might this word be translated? What, according

to Confucius, was the highest good? What were the differences between Confucius'

philosophy the philosophies of Legalism and Daoism? Do you think the Confucian notion

of “highest good” would be useful in modern America?

|||Sounds like you are trying to get someone to do your homework!

If you are taking a course that includes this you should be able to research it oneself.

A general answer for you:

Confucius was held in high veneration by the Chinese, and many acted in accordance with his teachings, much as Christians do with those of Jesus.

If you understand Confucius's teachings you will see how they applied to the actions of the Chinese during their history and this will give you an understanding of why certain courses of action and events occurred. Without this knowledge it would be much more difficult to fathom why something happened the way it did!|||I'm sure you'll find many answers to your many questions by studying the 'Confucius' page on Wikipedia. Sounds like you've been given a farely in depth project to tackle, have fun, check out the wiki page.
